RE: Pluses and minuses of mid-ship TV and side hall??

When I was shopping for my 2004 DSDP, I purposely passed up a side aisle, full bath, setup. At the time they weren't selling many of those floorplans. Now I think I would prefer that setup. Tom

RE: Rock guard for DP?

I have the under-tow from Blue Ox. I bought it to install on my 2002 gas MH. I traded for my 2004 DSDP before I installed it on the gas MH. There is/was a forum member from Alaska that modified his under-tow to work on a DP. He installed it then folded the area beneath the exhaust pipe out of the way and sewed it to stay in that position. I just never gave that a try, so my under-tow has been in my garage for almost 5 years. Tom

RE: Best way to park MH during hurricane?

Well Tom, looks like you Win. Its going to the Florida/Alabama border. Thats one issue with running when you live on a peninsular. You can't run far enough! Exactly. We weigh the treat of each hurricane warning, to see if we should evacuate or not. This storm was not projected to be that severe, so we stayed. I wasn't concerned about the MH getting destroyed, just wondered what the consensus was as to leaving the jacks down or having the airbags inflated or not. Thought someone might have had some logical or scientific reason why one particular setting was better then another. It seems all most people could respond with was to evacuate. Tom

RE: Best way to park MH during hurricane?

Never did get any high winds. I think the strongest gusts were in the mid 40s. When Charlie hit our area 4 years ago, they recorded a 175 mph gust. We were gone with the MH when Charlie hit and then evacuated 2 more times after that in 04. This time they were predicting 90 mph at the worst. I figured the house would be fine and didn't feel like driving to the Florida/Alabama border (600 miles each way) to drive out of the projected path, just to protect the MH. Thanks for the responses. RE: Best way to park MH during hurricane?

We have parked in two hurricanes -- by moving elsewhere out of the storms' paths. People with wheels who do not use them in the face of impending danger become part of the problem, and so far as I'm concerned, they should not be compensated one dime for their loses by government or insurance. That includes the Katrina dummies who had perfectly good vehicles in their driveways and chose to sit on their stupid fat butts while a storm of the century bore down on them. Mother Nature is boss and folks who can't grasp that concept, and who have the means to get out of harm's way but do not, deserve whatever happens to them. You come across as someone I wouldn't want anything to do it. Tom

RE: Best way to park MH during hurricane?

Hurricane Charlie hit our house in Punta Gorda,FL, pretty good, back in 8/04. We just happened to have left 2 weeks earlier on an extended MH trip. We drove home to have the house fixed and had to use the MH to evacuate twice more within the month. We thought about evacuating for Fay but it is just suppose to get to a Cat.1 hurricane. We would have to drive quite a ways to get past the projected path, so we thought it best to ride it out. We will be in the house with storm shutters up and have a hurricane proof garage door. I intend on backing both of our vehicles up against the door from the inside to help brace it. We use to have tall live oaks close to where we park the MH. I had them topped so there is no danger of them coming down on top of the MH. That is a good suggestion to fill our grey and black tanks with water for more weight. I was going to fill fresh water tank and the fuel tank is full. If you look at the: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at1+shtml/145241.shtml?3day?large#contents at 11:00 am today. The projected land fall is basically our house. Thanks tom

Best way to park MH during hurricane?

I was wondering what the consensus is as to the best way to park a MH, when strong winds are expected. We are probably going to have somewhere around 90 MPH winds tomorrow. I have the air tanks purged and the jacks deployed, just enough to take a little weight off the tires and level the MH. Don't know if it would help the MH ride out the wind with the jacks up or down. On my system I can't deploy the jacks without the air bags deflating. Tom

RE: Need help with Tracvision satellite dome

I have had the, in-motion, L2 for little over 4 years. There have been times that it seemed like the antenna wasn't moving, after I fill up fuel or leave a CG. After about 10 minutes of no activity, I turn off the inverter, for about 15 seconds, this seems to reboot the system. When I am at a CG I turn off the antenna, so it wont go into a search mode if we have heavy rains. Tom

RE: Oil, filter changes DP

I have changed my oil 4 times. It takes 27 quarts. I use (2) 20 quart oil, catch containers. They look like the ones that they sell at Walmart, but mine don't have any top, just a handle and a pour spout. This lets the oil flow into it easier and you can see when it is time to switch to the other container. I drain the oil into the first one until it gets about 3/4 full then I slide the empty one under. I do this on a piece of cardboard. The few drips that miss the containers, while I am switching them, land on the cardboard. I have never had a problem with oil spilling out of the filter when I remove it. You need to fill the new filter before installing it. It takes almost 3 quarts. Never had a problem putting the new filter on that is filled with oil. It is such a tight spot that it makes it easy to guide the filter into place. The biggest problem I have had was the first time breaking the filter loose. I use a strap wrench from NAPA that takes a 1/2 or 3/8 socket wrench. I use the 1/2 side with a 12" extension and ratchet. The trash service picks up all the old oil and other fluids. I pour the old oil into the new containers that I have just emptied and set them by the trash. Tom

RE: Dehumidifier for Classd A

I have been using a 25 pint dehumidifier for the last 4 1/2 years, while my DSDP is parked next to the house in SW Florida. I check it every few days and dump the water, if necessary. I could set it up to drain into the shower, but it works okay the way it is. On the few occasions where the bucket fills up, the unit shuts off, until I dump it. It is a bit heavy carrying it in and out of the MH between trips I also have one of the a/c's set at 90 degrees so my 2 satellite receivers don't overheat. I use a humidity gauge to make sure I don't get the interior too dry. Tom

RE: RV Friendly/unfriendly Gas Stations

I consider one of the perks of trading my gas Class A for a DP is the fact that I can refuel with the trucks. I always hated having to find a place that was easy in and easy out when filling up my gas MH. Tom

RE: 1997 Newmar Dutch Star 3865

Looks like a great deal. For that good of a price, I would either fly or drive up there to check it out. Check the ceiling for any water stains. Unless the tires were changed recently, you should factor in the cost of 6 new ones. Climb up on the roof and check the caulking along the seams. Make sure you test all the equipment, air conditioners, furnace, refrigerator, hot water heater, generator, hydraulic jacks, etc. Open and close every drawer door and window. Ask to see the maintenance records. You could put several thousand dollars in that DSDP, after you buy it and still be way ahead. Tom

RE: How to keep inside back wall of refigerator clean?

Stand your cans upright so they don't roll around. In over 30 years I've never run into this problem before and not sure why you would want to lay a can on it's side and then after traveling umpteen hours open that cold one while setting up. :h Larry They are glass bottles of Guiness and Amber Bock, also plastic water bottles. The one large bin area, at the bottom, my wife fills with a gallon jug of milk, and 2 large bottles of different juices. I never have had a problem opening a bottle after a long haul. Tom

RE: How to keep inside back wall of refigerator clean?

Thanks for the replies. The wife prefers laying the beverages flat. She thinks it allows for more shelves for other items. I think the black marks only show up after our longer trips of approximately 5,000 miles. We will try taping something like cloth at the back of the refrigerator. It is just a minor inconvenience having to strip the inside of the refrigerator, to get better access, to clean the back wall. Tom

How to keep inside back wall of refigerator clean?

The inside back wall, of my Norcold 4 door refrigerator, gets filled with black marks from my beverages that are laying flat, on the shelves. Before my last trip, of 4,800 miles,I completely emptied the refrigerator by taking the side trim pieces off, then the shelves and bins out. It took quite a bit of scrubbing with comet to remove all the black marks and swirls. Before leaving on the trip, this time we put aluminum foil against the back wall thinking it would keep the cans and bottles from rubbing and transferring the black marks. This did not work. It looked worse then our last long trip. Are there any tricks to keep this from happening? Thanks, Tom

RE: A/C Air filters

yep....they are inside the intake grilles measuring about 14x7.5 inches...made out of foam and easily cleaned with soap and water...then wring it out and re-install. The grilles are usually opened by squeezing a couple of tabs which then hinges down exposing the filter. This is the basic setup for mine which has two roof air units. You don't have basement air of some type do you? Newmar motorhomes are not like yours. They use multiple output and intake vents throughout the motorhome. I think I have approximately 12 to 14 total vents in the ceiling. They do not have just one intake grill per air conditioner. Their system is suppose to distribute air more evenly throughout the MH and be quieter while doing it. I don't know if it is any better then other methods. Tom
